Gifts

The holiday season got off to an early start when I woke up last Tuesday morning and received a gift from my sister.

It was a simple text that read – “Just wanted to say… I Love you! Have a great day!”

Now of course, I know that my sister loves me but it was a sweet and unexpected reminder. It put an instant smile on my face which reappears every time I think about it – including now. It was a gift of love that keeps giving.

Later in the week, I received the gift of music as I listened to my three daughters and their classmates perform beautifully in their holiday school concerts.

Of course, I was also blessed with the gift of music throughout the week as I heard them play the piano, ukulele, trumpet and sing.

I received the gift of forgiveness and understanding, when I accidentally shrunk my wife’s favorite pair of jeans.

At different times throughout the week, I was given the gift of honest conversations by family and friends alike.

I received so many other gifts this week including a few unexpected hugs, a handful of compliments, pride, patience and laughter

None of these gifts were wrapped. None would be found on a traditional Christmas list. None cost a cent.

Instead they just required someone else’s thoughtfulness and time. Two things that are priceless.

I loved and appreciated them all.

Of course, the worst of our world doesn’t take a break during the holiday season. There is still hardship, stress, grief, cruelty and even hate all around us. But if we look close enough we will also find love, hope and other wonderful gifts waiting for us to “open.”

It is a cliche to say that everyday is a gift, particularly when we are having an awful or even tragic one. But consider the alternative. Something I was reminded of when I received this gift of perspective by a stranger walking in front of me. The back of his hoodie read, “Dear person behind me, the world is a better place with you in it. Love, the person in front of you.”

How awesome is that?

So as you rush around trying to find last minute presents, take a pause to think about how your mere presence can inspire a simple gift to share with someone in real time.
